The national park lies on the boundary on Sabaragamuwa and uva province of Sri lankan. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displayed by the construction of the udawalawa reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to project the catchment of the reservoir. The park is capable large herd of elephants.

Yala national park is the most visited and the second largest national park in the Sri Lanka. Actually it consist of five blocks, two of which are now open the public and also adjoining parks. Yala host a variety of ecosystem raining from moist monsoon forest to freshwater and marine wetlands. It is one of the 70 important birds Areas in Sri Lanka. The number of animals that has been recorded from the park is 44 and it has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.

It's variously known as Adam’s Peak (the place where Adam first set foot on earth after being cast out of heaven), Sri Pada (Sacred Footprint, left by the Buddha as he headed towards paradise), or perhaps most poetically as Samanalakande (Butterfly Mountain; where butterflies go to die). Legends attribute the huge ‘footprint’ crowning the peak to St Thomas, the early apostle of India, or even Lord Shiva.
The pilgrimage season begins on poya day in December and runs until the Vesak festival in May. In season pilgrims and tourists alike make the climb up the countless steps to the top. At other times the summit's temple can be unused, and is often obscured by clouds.

Lovely Arugam Bay, a moon-shaped curl of soft sand, is home to a famed point break that many regard as the best surf spot in the country. It's a tiny place, with a population of a few hundred, and everything is dotted along a single road which parallels the coast.

If you’re not a surfer, there are plenty of other draws: beachfront guesthouses, Oceanside restaurants and a mellow, swing-another-day-in-a-hammock kind of vibe that’s totally removed from the brash west-coast beach resorts. Arugam Bay also makes a great base for several adventures in the surrounding hinterland. During the low season (November to April) things get extremely quiet and many places close altogether, but it can also be a serene time to visit, with few tourists and verdant landscapes.
